JULIA EMERY
BSc. BIO (Hons.), Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac.)
Originally from the Niagara Region of Ontario, Julia was raised on the importance of hard work, determination and excellence which continue to be at the core of everything she does. Her early background in Biomedical Science and an Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology eventually led her to her first career as a Zoologist and Wildlife Biologist. Here she specialized in Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation and Wildlife Medicine where her eagerness to care for others extended far beyond human health. Always a scholar, it was her nurturing side that eventually drew her toward a career field where she could exercise abundant care for others. To this day she remains grateful that this unique role allowed her to really sharpen her skills of sense, intuition and the ability to listen to all that is not said in medicine. It was here working with marine mammals that the constant pursuit of powerful natural healthcare solutions eventually introduced her to the mystery and healing potential of Acupuncture.
Shortly after this revelation, her passion, curiosity and mission to heal others grew so strong that she left her career behind and started her training in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. After years of disciplined study, she graduated with honours at the very top of her class. Following board exam certification and the full renovation of the new Institute of Movement clinic alongside her partner Dr. Scott Emery, Julia was ecstatic to apply her new skill set and start to change lives.
Julia is a board certified and licensed member in good standing of the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of British Columbia (CTCMA). In addition to her role as healer, she also plays a significant role behind the scenes of the clinic acting as the Director of Clinic Operations. She brings a great deal of pride, passion and energy to the clinic and everything she enjoys. Her own life experiences and health challenges have bestowed upon her a great deal of knowledge, understanding and empathy for how challenging the battle back to health can be for each individual. She loves taking on complex cases and enjoys watching patients develop renewed hope that even the most difficult and long standing health concerns can indeed be improved.
Julia truly loves her work and is captivated by the ability of the body to heal itself when given the correct stimulus to do so. Katrina Lortie is a Registered Acupuncturist, certified by the College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC, and a graduate of Kootenay Columbia College of Integrative Health Sciences (formerly the Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences).
Katrina has recently made the Kootenays her new home, bringing her love of Traditional Chinese Medicine to a new community. She has always been curious about the mind-body connection and began her holistic journey by embracing the art of mindfulness with yoga and meditation. Her desire for personal growth and meaningful work piqued her interest in energetic medicine where she can have a significant impact on others. She has a compassionate and intuitive approach to acupuncture, creating personalized sessions to support and empower patients on their unique wellness journey.
Struggling with a lifetime of eczema, she has a wealth of knowledge in treating skin conditions, including alopecia areata, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea. Katrina is also very passionate about caring for those with mental health issues, brain fog, insomnia, and fatigue. In consideration of the mind-body connection, she recognizes that some physical health conditions can be associated and relieved by releasing emotional trauma. She complements her acupuncture treatments with adjunct modalities such as fire cupping, moxibustion, tui na massage, and gua sha. And beyond the session, Katrina offers insights with yang sheng fa, which is lifestyle and dietary advice to support a balanced and vibrant life.
In addition to her practice, she enjoys feng shui as a way to create harmony in the physical environment and clarity in our emotional wellbeing. A healthy flow of Qi in the home is just as important as a healthy flow of Qi in the body. And in her spare time, you will probably see Katrina doing her daily walks through town, drinking tea, practicing yoga, and befriending local cats.

Dr. Danielle McCary grew up in Edmonton Alberta with her parents and younger sister. Throughout her childhood she was lucky enough to enjoy and compete in several sports - track & field, swimming, basketball, & wrestling. She ended up focusing her efforts on sprint canoeing after falling in love with being on the water, and eventually competed for Team Canada. After retiring from paddling she was dealing with several old injuries, which is how she found chiropractic care. She worked at a chiropractic clinic for a year and applied to go to school at Western States Chiropractic College (now University of Western States), which is where she met her husband, Dr. Phil.
After chiropractic school Danielle worked at a well established clinic in Portland that focused on motor vehicle collisions and trauma. During her 2 years working there she gained skills and knowledge to help acute pain patients recover. Eventually, Dr. Danielle and Dr. Phil had an opportunity to take over a clinic in the heart of Portland, which was a dream of theirs to be able to work together.
During the last 15 years Dr. Danielle has focused her care on treating prenatal, postpartum and pediatric populations. She loves supporting her patients through these big changes in life with the rest of their care team. She also worked at the University of Western States for several years, getting to focus with the students as they transitioned into their clinical phase of their education, and was an adjunct professor for pelvis adjusting. She believes it’s important to have more research on the benefits of chiropractic care and has participated in two research studies.

Dr. Phillip McCary – Dr. Phil has been a chiropractic patient much longer than he has been a practitioner. In fact his first adjustment was earlier than he can remember. In his early years his family lived in Eastern Washington farm county. Dr. Phil’s dad had injured his back working on the family farm and was going to see a country chiropractor. During one of those visits it came up that infant Dr. Phil had been constipated for a full week. The chiropractor asked if he could see him, gently adjusted his back and handed him back to his parents. Well this apparently did the trick. By the time they got home his OshKosh’s were completely overflowing!
Dr. Phil relied on chiropractic care throughout his athletic career. Competing in the 400m hurdles for the University of Washington. He went to the NCAA national championships three years in a row on the 4x400m relay team, and has placed 3rd at the PAC 10 Championships. After University Dr. Phil moved up distances and competed in 5k races up to the marathon.
Dr. McCary received his chiropractic education at the University of Western States. Along with a world class education he made many lifelong friends including Dr. Scott Emery, and his wife Dr. Danielle McCary. Dr. McCary has been practicing the last 15 years with his wife in Portland, Oregon as the owners of Laurelhurst Chiropractic. They made the big decision to sell that practice prior to moving to the Kootenays. Dr. Phil and Dr. Danielle share two daughters together, Aven and Calla. They are thrilled to be raising them in such a tight knit and family friendly community with so much access to the outdoors.
Dr. Phil has completed extensive continuing education specializing in treating automobile accident injuries. He received his Trauma Certification and Hospital Based Spine Care Certification through The Academy of Chiropractic and Cleveland University Kansas City in 2020. He is also Webster Certified and has completed Cranio-Sacral 1 to help better treat his prenatal and pediatric patients.
